Is it really possible to have an attorney “on retainer” for only $26 a month? Incredibly, the answer is yes! The key is how it’s done. Prepaid Legal has over 1.5 million members in the U.S. and Canada so they can buy “in bulk”. They contract with one of the largest, most reputable attorney firms in EVERY state. Those firms hire dozens of associate attorneys to handle the new “huge client” that they have, thus drastically increasing the power and size of their law firm. So not only do they become a bigger asset for us, we are also part of literally, their largest client. Instead of just being a little guy with a little problem, we get the service and attention that their largest client would expect. I personally have used Prepaid Legal for over 8 years now (as of April, 2010) and when I say “used” I mean USED. When I first signed up, I told my wife (Julene) “For our kids sake, nobody should be without a will. Why don’t we just sign up, get our wills done for free and then cancel it.” I said that because way to many of us overlook having a will in place because really, nobody plans on dying right? Well, bad things happen every day and if we are smart, we prepare for them. It makes life a lot easier for our kids. So that’s what I did. I signed up and immediately got started on our will. I also pretty quickly go yet another speeding ticket. That allowed me to see firsthand how the Prepaid Legal service took care of that ticket for me and I didn’t have to pay a penny in attorney fees. I also was in the landlord business at the time and had to have a few documents reviewed and a bad check collected (both of which the attorney’s handled for me for free). Real quick I began to see just how much I got for my $26 month. Instead of cancelling it, I had it set up to bank draft automatically out of my account and I have never been without it since. When we hit a deer with our van and the insurance didn’t want to give us what it was worth and basically treated us like dirt, we had the attorney call them and immediately they offered us $500 more. That may not seem like much however it’s $500 we would have never seen which covered my Prepaid Legal fees for the next year and a half and even more importantly, I didn’t have to live with feeling like I got screwed. Instead, I got to live with the feeling that we stood up for ourselves and didn’t get taken advantage of. That alone is worth it!

We used to sell antiques out of a store that we owned and we signed up for a service online to sell antiques for us online. Right now, we are having to defend ourselves in a lawsuit to defend our lease being broken on the property in CA. The lawsuit violates both state and federal landlord/tenant protections however, they have the money to try to push us around and this is a prime example of where just because someone has the money to be a bully, normally they could because most people don’t have the finances to spend tens of thousands of dollars to defend their rights so the predatory party would win. At $375 an hour, that’s $7500 worth of pre-trial hours and over $75,000 worth of trial, appeals, post trial, etc work. Talk about not having to just let ourselves be bullied around!
